breast scan

Comprehensive breast imaging for structure and tissue stiffness evaluation

Phoenix Ultrasound now offers combined 3D Breast Ultrasound and Breast Elastography, providing a more detailed and advanced assessment of breast tissue. This dual-modality approach enhances diagnostic accuracy by evaluating both the structural appearance and the mechanical stiffness of breast tissue—key factors in detecting and characterising abnormalities.

This combined scan is particularly useful for patients with dense breast tissue, unclear findings on previous scans, or those undergoing follow-up for known lesions.

What is 3D Breast Ultrasound?

3D Breast Ultrasound is a modern, non-invasive, radiation-free imaging method that captures volumetric datasets of the breast.
It offers:

  • Detailed three-dimensional views
  • Improved detection of subtle findings
  • Greater clarity in evaluating lesion size, borders, and internal structure

This technology allows ultrasound specialist to analyse breast tissue comprehensively from multiple planes and angles.

What is Breast Shear wave Elastography?

Breast elastography is an advanced ultrasound technique that measures the stiffness (elasticity) of breast tissue.
It works by analysing how tissue responds to gentle compression or shear waves generated by the ultrasound probe.

  • Soft tissue usually suggests benign changes
  • Stiffer areas may indicate abnormalities that require closer evaluation

Elastography is a valuable tool for distinguishing benign from suspicious lesions and reducing unnecessary biopsies.

Why combine 3D Breast Ultrasound Plus Elastography?

Together, these two methods provide a complete and highly accurate assessment:
  • 3D ultrasound shows the shape, structure, and extent of any lesion
  • Elastography reveals the stiffness characteristics, which helps differentiate suspicious from benign findings
This combination improves diagnostic confidence and helps guide appropriate next steps in patient care.

Benefits of the Combined 3D Ultrasound Plus Shear Wave Elastography Scan

  • Enhanced lesion characterisation (shape + stiffness)
  • ✔ Higher diagnostic accuracy in dense breasts
  • ✔ Improved early detection of small or subtle abnormalities
  • ✔ Better assessment of lesions that appear indeterminate on 2D scans
  • ✔ Reduction in unnecessary biopsies when elasticity suggests benignity
  • ✔ Safe, comfortable, and radiation-free
  • ✔ Useful for baseline and follow-up evaluations

Who is this scan recommended for?

This combined assessment is ideal for:

  • Patients with dense breast tissue
  • Individuals with an indeterminate finding on previous 2D ultrasound or mammography
  • Those requiring more detailed assessment of a known lump
  • Follow-up of benign lesions under surveillance
  • Patients with a family history of breast cancer
  • Younger patients who need advanced breast screening without radiation exposure

Preparing For Scan: Tips And Guidelines

No special preparation is needed.
Please bring any previous imaging (ultrasound, mammogram, or MRI) to assist with comparison.

How the scan is performed

  • You will lie comfortably on the examination couch.
  • The sonographer performs a detailed 3D breast scan, collecting a volumetric dataset.
  • Elastography is then performed to assess the stiffness of any areas of concern.
  • Both imaging sets are analysed together by the ultrasound specialist.
  • A comprehensive report is prepared for you.

The entire combined procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes.

Limitations

  • This scan does not replace mammography in women over 40.
  • Additional imaging such as MRI or further ultrasound may still be needed in certain cases.
  • Elastography values may vary based on technique and tissue type; interpretation is performed by ultrasound specialist.
