A question before you book? Call usTell us about your symptoms
Pain in your side or back, burning or frequent urination, blood in the urine or a known kidney condition — let the sonographer know.
Understand the scan
Gel is applied and the probe is moved over your sides, back and lower tummy. You may be asked to empty your bladder part-way so it can be checked again. It is painless and takes about 20 minutes.

The sonographer explains what they have seen, and your written report follows within 24 hours — ready to share with your GP or urologist.

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. If you have a referral letter or recent results, bring them along so the scan can focus on the right questions.
Why do I need a full bladder?
A full bladder stretches out its wall so it can be seen and measured clearly. Drinking 1 litre of water an hour before and not using the toilet gives the best view.
Can it find kidney stones?
Ultrasound shows most kidney stones and any swelling of the kidney they cause. Very small stones, or stones lower down in the ureters, can be harder to see, and your doctor may suggest a CT scan if symptoms continue.
Is it suitable for recurrent urine infections?
Yes. It can look for things that make infections more likely, such as stones, a blockage or a bladder that does not empty fully. It does not test the urine itself — your GP can arrange that.
What if I have severe pain or a fever?
Severe pain in your side, a high temperature with shivering, or being unable to pass urine needs urgent advice: contact your GP or NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency. Do not wait for a private scan.

- Drink 1 litre of still water (2 pints) one hour before your appointment time.
- Please do not use the toilet before the scan — a full bladder is needed to see it properly.
- Take your usual medication as normal, unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
- Bring recent urine or kidney blood test results if you have them.
