Advanced breast imaging for clearer, more accurate assessment

Phoenix Ultrasound is pleased to introduce 3D Breast Ultrasound, an advanced imaging technology that provides high-resolution volumetric images of breast tissue. This innovative approach enhances diagnostic accuracy, particularly in patients with dense breast tissue, and allows for a more comprehensive and confident evaluation.

What is 3D Breast Ultrasound?

3D Breast Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, radiation-free imaging technique that captures a complete volumetric dataset of the breast. Using specialised transducers and advanced software, the system reconstructs three-dimensional images that allow ultrasound specialist to examine tissue in multiple planes and with greater clarity than traditional 2D ultrasound.

This improves the visibility of subtle abnormalities and increases the reliability of early detection.

Who may benefit from 3D Breast Ultrasound?

3D breast imaging is particularly helpful for:

  • Individuals with dense breast tissue
  • Patients needing more precise evaluation after an initial scan
  • Those with a family history of breast cancer
  • Younger patients undergoing breast screening
  • Follow-up of previously identified lesions
  • Evaluation of areas that appear unclear on 2D ultrasound or mammography

Preparation for 3D Breast Ultrasound

No special preparation is required.
If possible, please bring any previous breast imaging reports (ultrasound, mammography, MRI) to assist with comparison.

How the procedure is performed

  • You will lie comfortably on the examination couch.
  • The sonographer will use a specialised 3D transducer to scan the breast.
  • The device captures a complete volumetric dataset of the breast tissue.
  • The system reconstructs high-resolution 3D images.
  • Ultrasound specialist reviews the dataset in detail and prepares your report.

The appointment typically takes 20 minutes, and you may resume your normal activities immediately afterwards.

Limitations of 3D Breast Ultrasound

  • It does not replace mammography for women over 50; instead, it serves as an adjunct technique.
  • In some cases, additional imaging—such as  mammography, or MRI—may still be recommended.
  • Like any imaging test, 3D ultrasound may identify findings that require further review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are useful, but 3D imaging provides additional clarity and is especially beneficial for dense breast tissue.
No. It is a comfortable, non-invasive procedure.
For patients under 50, it can be used as the primary imaging method. For those over 50, it is a complementary tool and not a mammogram replacement.
Your report will be prepared on the same day or within 24 hours.

Booking Requirements

To secure your appointment, please ensure the following:

  • No GP referral is needed — self-referral is accepted
  • Complete the online or telephone pre-scan questionnaire
  • Flexible payment methods (Klarna) are available
  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment
  • Bring a form of photo ID and any relevant previous medical imaging/reports
