You lie on your side. A slim, lubricated probe is gently placed in the back passage. It may feel a little uncomfortable but should not hurt. It is painless and takes about 20 minutes.

What if I cannot pass urine?
Being unable to pass urine is an emergency. Go to A&E or call 999.

- Use a small enema (from a pharmacy) 1–2 hours before, if you can — an empty rectum improves the images.
- Come with a comfortably full bladder — drink about 500 ml of still water an hour before.
- Take your usual medication unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
- Bring any previous scans, reports or doctor’s letters so the sonographer can compare and focus on what matters.
