The wrist packs many tendons, ligaments and nerves into a small space. Ultrasound shows them clearly and can watch them move as you bend and turn your hand.
Look for tendon inflammation, such as De Quervain's, tears and fluid around the tendons.
Identify ganglion cysts and other soft-tissue lumps, and show where they come from.
Measure the median nerve for signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, and check the ulnar side.
Assess ligament injury, swelling and inflammation in the joint.
Why ultrasound for joints? It shows tendons, ligaments, muscles and fluid while you move, with no radiation — and the sonographer can scan exactly where it hurts. It does not show the inside of bones as well as an X-ray or MRI, so further imaging is sometimes suggested.
A Wrist Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to evaluate the soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints in the wrist. This scan is highly effective in diagnosing conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, ligament injuries, and arthritis. By providing real-time images of the wrist’s internal structures, the scan offers detailed insights into conditions affecting mobility and function.

A Wrist Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the wrist, including:
This scan is especially useful for assessing soft tissue injuries that may not be visible through X-rays or other imaging techniques, making it an ideal diagnostic tool for wrist-related issues.
A Wrist Ultrasound provides crucial information about various wrist conditions by:
This scan is recommended for individuals experiencing:
If you’re dealing with wrist pain, discomfort, or suspected injuries, a Wrist Ultrasound Scan can offer valuable insights for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment. Schedule your scan today to ensure the best care for your wrist health and function.
At Phoenix Clinic, we also provide Hand Ultrasound Scan services to assess conditions affecting the hand, fingers, and soft tissues. You can book your appointment today for an accurate and comprehensive ultrasound assessment.
From getting ready to discussing what comes next, here is a simple guide to your appointment.
A question before you book? Call usAn injury, a gradual ache, swelling, clicking or weakness — and which activities bring it on. Point to exactly where it hurts.
You sit with your arm resting on a pillow. Gel is applied and the probe is moved over the wrist while you gently move your fingers and hand. It is painless and takes about 20 minutes for one side.
The sonographer explains what they have seen, and your written report follows within 24 hours — ready to share with your GP, physiotherapist or orthopaedic specialist.
Choose the location that works for you. Confirm your selected clinic in the booking system before completing your appointment.

No. You can book directly. A referral letter from your GP, physiotherapist or consultant is welcome but not required.
Book one side if only one wrist is affected. Choose Two Sides if both are painful, or if your clinician wants a comparison. Combined options are in the booking form.
Ultrasound can show swelling of the median nerve, which supports the diagnosis. Your doctor may also suggest nerve conduction tests, which measure how well the nerve is working.
If your symptoms spread into the fingers or palm, the Wrist + Hand option covers both in one appointment.
If you cannot bear weight or move the joint, have a visible deformity, numbness, or think something may be broken, go to an urgent treatment centre or A&E rather than waiting for a scan.
You may need a wrist ultrasound scan if you experience one or more of the following signs and symptoms:
• Pain and swelling around the wrist region, affecting movement, daily activities or sporting activities.
• Pain during gripping, pressure or repetitive movements.
• Stiffness in the wrist in the morning or after a period of inactivity.
• Limited range of motion, pain or difficulty fully bending or twisting the wrist.
• Pain, limited range of motion, or instability after a fall, injury or accident.
• Unable to progress training or to achieve nominal performance.
• Numbness, tingling or other nerve symptoms (pins and needles, burning pain, electric shock sensation) in the wrist or hand.
• Discomfort during sport or at the end of an active day.
• Concerned about and bumps in the wrist region.
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, consider booking a wrist ultrasound scan at Phoenix Ultrasound to assess the underlying structures and diagnose any potential issues. Early detection can lead to timely intervention and better outcomes.
During this ultrasound scan, our specialist sonographer will assess the whole wrist region using ultrasound technology.
The appointment encompasses the following:
• Relevant Medical History: We will gather information about your medical history and injuries to ensure a thorough assessment.
• Ultrasound Examination: We will perform a detailed ultrasound scan of the wrist, including the joints (wrist and distal radio-ulnar joint), overlying extensor tendon compartments, flexor tendons, median and ulnar nerves, and other mechanical or inflammatory issues.
• Explanation of Findings: You will receive clear explanations of all findings during and after the ultrasound scan.
• Official Report: We will provide you with an official report within 24 hours, including relevant images from your scan.
• Further Recommendations: If necessary, we may recommend a follow-up scan, referral to your GP or a specialist, or suggest additional tests such as blood test or other imaging.
At Phoenix Ultrasound, our goal is to offer a comprehensive and informative service to guide you through the diagnostic process. Your health and well-being are our top priorities.
The most common findings are tenosynovitis (inflammation, fluid and thickening of the sheath surrounding the tendons of the wrist, such as in De Quervain’s tenosynovitis), and ganglion cysts (small lumps caused by pockets of fluid developing around the wrist joint and tendons).
The wrist joint is assessed for signs of synovitis (joint inflammation with fluid and thickening, causing stiffness and pain).
Ultrasound is also useful to assess the median nerve and ulnar nerve for signs of entrapment neuropathies (carpal tunnel syndrome CTS, or Guyon’s canal respectively).
There is no essential preparation for this scan.
However, as the scan involves exposing the wrist, we recommend wearing clothing that allows easy access and full mobility.
Our ultrasound specialist will explain the procedure before starting. You will be guided to sit upright facing the sonographer and expose the wrist. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to the examined area for optimal imaging. Our specialist will move the probe on your skin to produce diagnostic ultrasound images.
You may be asked to move the wrist and hand in various positions, which helps better visualise structures around the wrist. Wrist ultrasound scan is safe, non-invasive (external, onto the skin), involve no radiation, and are painless so you are not expected to feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan.
A wrist ultrasound scan is usually completed within 15-20 minutes. Our sonographer will provide recommendations based on the findings of the ultrasound scan.
You will receive your results verbally immediately after the scan. Following the appointment, the sonographer will review the images and prepare a written report within 24 hours, with any recommended actions.
The report and images will be sent to you, allowing you to discuss the findings with your doctor or physiotherapist if necessary.
There are no associated risks or side effects with a wrist ultrasound scan. Ultrasound, the imaging technique used, does not involve any radiation.
This is one reason why doctors prefer ultrasound for monitoring developing babies in pregnant women.

A Wrist Ultrasound Scan can help diagnose a range of wrist conditions, including tendon injuries, ligament damage, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, joint inflammation, cysts, and soft tissue abnormalities. It provides detailed images of the wrist’s internal structures to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
A Wrist Ultrasound Scan and an X-ray examine different structures. While X-rays are mainly used to assess bones, ultrasound is particularly effective for viewing soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, nerves, muscles, and cysts. This makes it a useful option for evaluating many wrist conditions that may not be visible on X-rays.
A Wrist Ultrasound Scan is usually a quick procedure that takes around 15–30 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the condition being assessed. The scan is non-invasive, painless, and you can usually return to your normal activities immediately afterwards.
