How Is an Abdominal Ultrasound Scan Done? | What to Expect

An abdominal ultrasound scan is a non-invasive and painless imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce live images of abdominal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and abdominal aorta. This safe diagnostic test does not use any radiation, making it suitable for all ages.

What to Expect Before the Abdominal Ultrasound

  • Fasting Required: You may need to avoid food and drink for 4–6 hours before the scan. This helps reduce gas in the intestines for clearer imaging.
  • Comfortable Positioning: You’ll be asked to lie on your back on an examination bed.
  • Gel Application: A water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to your abdomen to help transmit sound waves.
  • Clothing: You might need to lift or adjust your clothing to expose the abdomen.

What Happens During the Abdominal Ultrasound Procedure

  • A trained sonographer or radiologist will use a handheld device called a transducer and gently glide it over your abdomen.
  • You may be asked to hold your breath or turn to one side to get a better view of certain organs.
  • The specialist will capture real-time images, take measurements, and make clinical notes for review.

What to Expect After the Scan

  • The gel will be cleaned off, and you can resume normal activities immediately.
  • A detailed radiology report is usually prepared within 24 hours and sent to your referring healthcare provider.

From getting ready to discussing what comes next, here is a simple guide to your appointment.

A question before you book? Call us
1

Tell us about your symptoms

Where the pain is, how long it has been there, any blood test results and your medical history all help direct the scan.

2

Understand the scan

You lie on your back, gel is applied to your upper tummy and the probe is moved across it. You may be asked to take a deep breath in and hold it. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

3

Talk about the next steps

The sonographer discusses the findings with you on the day. Ask what they mean, whether anything needs repeating, and who should receive the report.

Do I really have to fast for 6 hours?

Yes, for the upper abdomen. Food makes the gallbladder contract and brings gas into the way, which can hide gallstones entirely. Still water is fine. If you are diabetic or cannot fast safely, call us and we will arrange a suitable time.

What is included in the scan?

A full examination of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and abdominal aorta, high-resolution images, a written report by an experienced sonographer, and a discussion of the findings with you on the day.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly, and the report is yours to share with your GP, a consultant or an insurer.

Does it cover the pelvis or bladder?

Not on its own. If you need the pelvis, bladder or urinary tract as well, choose the combined option in the booking form — it has its own preparation, including a full bladder.

Is there any radiation?

None. Ultrasound uses sound waves only. Nothing is injected and there are no after-effects, so you can eat and drive straight afterwards.

When will I get my results?

The sonographer discusses the findings with you on the day, and the written report is normally available the same day.

Why might I need an abdominal ultrasound scan?

Your doctor or clinician may recommend an abdominal ultrasound to investigate symptoms such as:

    • ✔ Abdominal pain or swelling
    • ✔ Unexplained weight loss
    • ✔ Jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes)
    • ✔ Kidney stones
    • ✔ Liver abnormalities or fatty liver
    • ✔ Gallstones

How do I prepare for the scan?

To ensure the best results:

    • ✔  Do not eat for at least 6 hours before your scan.
    • ✔  You can drink water, but avoid fizzy drinks or anything with caffeine.
    • ✔  Take your usual medications unless advised otherwise.
    • ✔  Diabetic patients should consult their healthcare provider for specific instructions.

What happens if something abnormal is found?

If the scan detects any abnormalities, your sonographer will explain the findings and provide a detailed report. You will be advised to share the report with your GP or specialist for further management.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Preparation, made clear.

  • Do not eat for 6 hours before your appointment time — an empty stomach and gallbladder give a far clearer view.
  • Still water is fine during those 6 hours.
  • Take your usual medication as normal, unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
  • Diabetic or unable to fast? Call us and we will plan the appointment around it.

Booking the abdominal scan together with a pelvic or urinary tract scan? You will also need to drink 1 litre of still water an hour before and arrive with a full bladder. Call us on 020 3318 1373 if you are unsure.
