Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. If your GP or specialist has asked for this scan, bring their letter so the sonographer knows what to focus on.
Why fast and drink water?
Fasting keeps the gallbladder full and reduces gas; a full bladder lifts the bowel out of the way so the pelvis can be seen.
Can I upgrade to a full-body scan?
Yes. Where shown, the booking form offers a Full-body or Full-body Plus option that includes this area alongside the other organs, in one longer appointment.
What if I have severe pain?
Severe tummy pain, a high temperature, vomiting that will not stop or yellowing of the skin needs urgent advice: contact NHS 111 or your GP, or call 999 in an emergency. Do not wait for a private scan.

Preparation, made clear.
- Do not eat for 6 hours before your appointment — an empty stomach gives the clearest view of the upper abdomen.
- Drink 1 litre (2 pints) of still water about 1 hour before and try not to empty your bladder, so the bladder and pelvis can be seen too.
- Take your usual medication unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
- Bring any previous scans, reports or doctor’s letters so the sonographer can compare and focus on what matters.
