01 / UNDERSTANDING YOUR SCAN

A closer look.
In three dimensions.

A transrectal scan places the probe right next to the prostate. 3D imaging captures the whole gland as a volume, and colour Doppler shows how blood flows through it.

01

3D volume

Measure the prostate accurately, useful for PSA density.

02

Structure

Look at the zones of the gland, nodules and calcifications.

03

Colour Doppler

Show blood flow and areas of increased vascularity.

04

Seminal vesicles

Check the seminal vesicles and surrounding tissue.

This scan does not replace MRI or biopsy. It adds information for your GP or urologist, who decides whether further tests are needed.

IN DETAIL

3D Prostate Colour Doppler Ultrasound

A 3D prostate colour Doppler ultrasound is a transrectal scan of the prostate. A slim probe placed in the back passage sits right next to the gland, giving a much closer and more detailed view than a scan through the tummy.

What does 3D add?

3D imaging records the whole prostate as a volume rather than single slices. This gives an accurate measurement of prostate size, which helps your doctor interpret your PSA result (PSA density), and lets the sonographer review the gland from any angle.

What does colour Doppler show?

Colour Doppler shows blood flow inside the prostate. Areas with more blood flow than expected can be highlighted in your report for your GP or urologist.

Who is it for?

Men with a raised PSA, urinary symptoms such as a weak stream or getting up at night, an enlarged prostate, or those being monitored after previous tests. It does not replace MRI or biopsy, but it adds useful information to help decide the next steps.

1

Tell us your history

PSA results, urinary symptoms and any previous MRI or biopsy.

2

Understand the scan

You lie on your side. A slim, lubricated probe is gently placed in the back passage. It may feel a little uncomfortable but should not hurt. It is painless and takes about 20 minutes.

3

Talk about the next steps

The sonographer talks you through what they have seen, and your written report follows within 24 hours — ready to share with your GP or specialist.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly. If your GP or specialist has asked for this scan, bring their letter so the sonographer knows what to focus on.

How is this different from a standard prostate scan?

A tummy (transabdominal) prostate scan looks through the bladder. The transrectal 3D scan is closer to the gland, so it gives more detail and a more accurate volume.

Is a chaperone available?

Yes. You can ask for a chaperone at any time.

What if I cannot pass urine?

Being unable to pass urine is an emergency. Go to A&E or call 999.

How do I book and confirm the price?

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Preparation, made clear.

  • Use a small enema (from a pharmacy) 1–2 hours before, if you can — an empty rectum improves the images.
  • Come with a comfortably full bladder — drink about 500 ml of still water an hour before.
  • Take your usual medication unless your doctor has told you otherwise.
  • Bring any previous scans, reports or doctor’s letters so the sonographer can compare and focus on what matters.

Booking this alongside another scan? Each scan keeps its own preparation. If anything is unclear, call us on 020 3318 1373 before your visit.

If you feel unwell, seek medical advice. This page is general information, not a diagnosis. For urgent concerns, contact your GP or NHS 111; in an emergency call 999.
