Definition
A kidney and bladder ultrasound (sometimes called a renal and bladder ultrasound) is a non-invasive assessment of the kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder using high-frequency sound waves. It gives our sonographers a real-time picture of the size, shape and structure of each organ, so any abnormality can be identified and measured without radiation or injections.
When and Why We Use Kidney and Bladder Ultrasound
We use a kidney and bladder ultrasound to investigate a wide range of urinary symptoms and to monitor conditions that are already known about. It’s one of the most requested first-line scans for anyone with ongoing urinary discomfort, and it’s often the scan a GP, urologist or nephrologist orders before deciding on further treatment.

What the Scan Includes
Every kidney and bladder ultrasound at Phoenix Ultrasound covers both kidneys and the bladder as standard, with the ureters checked for signs of obstruction and, where your bladder filling allows, a look at the ureteric jets. The full appointment takes 15–20 minutes, and you’ll need to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the clearest images.

What to Expect on the Day
You’ll be met with a brief clinical questionnaire and a clear explanation of what’s about to happen, so there are no surprises once you’re on the couch.
- Gel is applied to your abdomen and pelvis, and a handheld probe is moved gently across the skin.
- You may be asked to turn onto your side so we can get views from different angles.
- Partway through, you may be asked to empty your bladder so we can check how well it drains (the post-void residual volume).
- You’ll get a verbal summary immediately after the scan, and your full report is delivered digitally afterwards.
Who Performs the Scan & Equipment Used
Your scan is performed by an HCPC-registered sonographer or a consultant radiologist, using high-resolution diagnostic ultrasound systems with Doppler capability — the same standard of equipment used to assess blood flow as well as structure, giving a fuller picture where it’s clinically useful.

Safety and Limitations
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, so it’s safe for patients of all ages, including children. According to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust:

That said, ultrasound has real limits. A few factors can affect what we’re able to see clearly:
